Often referred to as the Karl Lagerfeld of India, Tarun Tahiliani reinvented the rich
Indian heritage as contemporary high fashion through his genius of craftsmanship. His
unique combination of historical opulence and modern-day chic has created the ultimate
fusion brand, ‘Indian Modern’. It is essentially lush exuberance and richly detailed,
structured draping that represents Tarun’s modern, Indian woman. A Wharton School of
Business alumnus, his family business of shipping equipment was not to be his calling.
Noticing the scarcity of good designer wear in India, he opened the country’s first multi-
designer boutique, Ensemble. In 1991 he received an associate degree from the Fashion
Institute of Technology, New York and the rest is history. The Tarun Tahiliani Design
Studio creates couture, diffusion and prêt-a-porter collections, which are Indian in their
sensibility, yet international in their appeal. Tarun made waves internationally when
Jemima Khan wore his outfit for her wedding with Pakistani cricketer, Imran Khan in
1995. He is the first Indian designer to be invited to showcase at the Milan Fashion
Week. His creations have adorned many beauty queens, actresses and international
celebrities. Tarun’s discovery of unique drapes adding a touch of ethnicity continues
with his timeless collections.
